San Andrés has a rich history shaped by its strategic location in the Caribbean. Originally inhabited by indigenous peoples, the island was colonized by the British in the 17th century and later contested by the Spanish and pirates. It served as a refuge for corsairs before being formally integrated into Colombia in the 19th century. The island’s culture reflects a unique Afro-Caribbean and English blend, especially evident in its creole language and local traditions.

San Andrés is a volcanic island located in the western Caribbean Sea, about 700 km from mainland Colombia and close to Nicaragua. It measures approximately 13 km in length and 3 km in width.
