History

San Andrés has a rich history shaped by its strategic location in the Caribbean. Originally inhabited by indigenous peoples, the island was colonized by the British in the 17th century and later contested by the Spanish and pirates. It served as a refuge for corsairs before being formally integrated into Colombia in the 19th century. The island’s culture reflects a unique Afro-Caribbean and English blend, especially evident in its creole language and local traditions.

Geography

San Andrés is a volcanic island located in the western Caribbean Sea, about 700 km from mainland Colombia and close to Nicaragua. It measures approximately 13 km in length and 3 km in width. It is part of the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its marine biodiversity.

Attractions

Top attractions include Johnny Cay, a small islet with idyllic beaches; the Natural Aquarium, ideal for snorkeling; Morgan’s Cave, linked to the legendary pirate; and La Loma, the highest point on the island offering panoramic views. Boat rides, jet skiing, and strolls along the San Andrés boardwalk are also popular activities.

Flora & Fauna

San Andrés is home to diverse flora and fauna, especially marine life. Its coral reefs host numerous species of tropical fish, rays, sea turtles, and colorful corals. On land, you’ll find coconut palms, mangroves, and birds such as herons and frigates. Conservation of the ecosystem is a major priority on the island.

Climate

San Andrés enjoys a warm tropical climate year-round, with average temperatures ranging between 27°C and 30°C (80°F to 86°F). The dry season runs from December to April, while the rainy season from May to November brings occasional but usually short-lived showers. It’s an ideal destination to visit any time of the year.
