How to visit Machu Picchu? After almost 8 months closed, the citadel of Machu Picchu reopens to tourists from November 1st 2020.

It is important to note that Machu Picchu has the Safe Travels seal. This means it is a safe destination from the moment the visitors arrive at the train station in Aguas Calientes. Accommodation, restaurants, transportation to the sanctuary as well as its interior are also safe.

Next, we tell you how to visit Machu Picchu in the “new normal”:

 

  1. Transport by train:
  • Peru Rail operates in the Expedition service from the San Pedro (Cusco) and Ollantaytambo stations, and in the Vistadome with departures from Ollantaytambo. For both services, the returns end at the Ollantaytambo station.
  • Inca Rail is operating in The Voyager service with departure and return to the Ollantaytambo station.
  • Before entering the train, as an essential requirement, all passengers must fill out and hand in an affidavit consisting of a symptomatology record card, applicable according to age: General, for people aged between 15 and 64; Minors, aged between 0 and 14; and Senior Adult, aged from 65.
  • From the arrival at the train station, passengers must wear a mask and face shield properly and permanently.
  • Upon entering the station, the company staff will check the temperature of all passengers.
  • Passengers must show the boarding pass from their cell phones and their valid identity document.
  • All passengers must respect social distancing and respect the signage in the room and on board the train.
  • When boarding, passengers will once again go through a temperature control and disinfection of their personal belongings and luggage.
  • The capacity of the wagons has been reduced to 50% to keep physical distance.
  • Each passenger must carry luggage with a maximum weight of 5kg / 11lb.
  • It is forbidden to take food into the train.
  • When disembarking, passengers must be attentive to the instructions of the staff on board to keep the order and maintain social distancing.
  • To continue with the established controls, each passenger must undergo a temperature control and follow instructions for a final disinfection of their personal items and luggage.
  • Passengers should leave the arrival station as soon as possible to avoid crowds.
  1. Transportation from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu (Tourist bus)
  • The boarding point of the tour’s beginning that starts in Machu Picchu Town towards the Machu Picchu Sanctuary, will take place at three different points. Two boarding points at Hermanos Ayar Avenue and one boarding point at Puente Ruinas. Each boarding point will be implemented with the corresponding signage and with security personnel to provide the necessary assistance to users. Social distancing is at least 2 meters between the people in line.
  • The boarding point for the start of the descent route, which begins at the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu towards Machu Picchu Town, will take place at two different points. The boarding points are detailed in the following image. Only in this location we can guarantee a distance of at least 2 meters between the people in the line. Likewise, we will have security personnel who will provide the necessary guidance and help.

  • When boarding, passengers must follow the signage implemented by the company, respecting social distancing.
  • All passengers must wear a mask and face shield correctly and permanently.
  • Passengers must present the affidavit of health status before boarding the transport.
  • The company staff will check the temperature of the passengers before entering the transport. If the temperature is equal to or higher than 38 ° C the passenger will not be allowed to enter the bus.
  • Passengers must disinfect hands and shoes before entering the transport.
  • Passengers must show the ticket without having contact with the staff. It is preferable to avoid printing the ticket and use technological means instead.
  • Vehicles will be occupied at 50% of their capacity. Passengers must respect the signs of the prohibited seats.
  • Keep windows open for greater ventilation during the tour.
  • The consumption of food and beverages is not allowed during the tour.
  • It is totally forbidden to throw waste inside the bus. The embarkation and disembarkation points have waste containers.
  • When leaving the vehicle, passengers must keep order and social distancing. Passengers must follow the instructions of the security personnel.

 

  1. In the citadel of Machu Picchu
  • Staff and visitors must keep social distancing of 1.5 meters.
  • During the tour, it is recommended a minimum distance of two (02) meters between visitors and at least twenty (20) meters between different groups or social bubbles.
  • All visitors must use the mask and face shield correctly.
  • Contact with the surface of the pre-Hispanic walls is prohibited.
  • Temperature will be taken upon entry and exit, if a result higher than 38 ° C is reported, entry will not be allowed, and the suspect will be isolated. The competent authorities and the immediate boss will be notified.
  • While the Sanitary Emergency and its extension are in force under the SD N ° 008-2020-SA, the maximum admission capacity for the llaqta or Inca city of Machu Picchu will be six hundred and seventy-five (675) visitors per day distributed in seventy-five (75) visitors per hour.
  • The maximum number of visitors per group is eight (08) corresponding, if applicable, to seven (07) tourists and one (01) tour guide.
  • From the reopening until further notice, the visiting hours will not apply to the Intiwatana and Temple of the Condor. The Temple of the Sun complex will not be available for tourist visits.
  • The alternative routes of the Machu Picchu llaqta (Machu Picchu and Waynapicchu Mountains, Puente Inka and Intipunku) will not be available for tourist visits until further notice.
  • During the tourist visit, the consumption of food will not be allowed in the llaqta or Inca city of Machu Picchu.
  • Visitors must sign the affidavit of health in accordance with the “Contractor and Visitors Health Declaration Form“. In case they had presented the infection, they must present the document that accredits the respective discharge.
