Trujillo city is the capital of La Libertad department. It is located at the Peruvian northwest and is the third most important city of the country. Founded in 1534 by Miguel de Estete, it was the provisional capital of Peru during its independence. Trujillo is known as the “City of Everlasting Spring” because its privileged weather throughout the year.
Like Chiclayo, Trujillo is territory of the Mochica culture, so in this Peru trip we can find archaeological remains of this culture such as the Sun and Moon Temples, Chanchan and Dragon’s Temple there.
Travel to Trujillo and discoverthe city of Chan Chan which was the capital of the great Chimú kingdom, a pre-Inca culture. It is located in the Moche Valley. Chan Chan is the biggest mud city in the world. It has a 20 km2 area and it can only be compared to the archaeological remains of Teotihuacán in Mexico or to the ancient cities of Egypt.

Upon arrival in Trujillo you will be transferred to the hotel with the assistance of a guide.
Visit the beautiful colonial mansions in Trujillo and marvel at their impressive portals, balconies and churches that are very well preserved. Then, we will have a guided tour in the National University of Trujillo’s Archeology Museum for an overall acknowledgment of the pre-Columbian cultures of the region.

We will pick you up early in the morning to go to the Sun and Moon Temple. Once we arrive at the Moche valley, we will be received by a traditional family, descendants of the ancient inhabitants that built the impressive Sun and Moon Pyramids which were the power center in the Peruvian coast during the Moche times. Then, you can observe the amazing group of fresco paintings in adobe in one of the Moon Temple’s walls that was unearthed by the archaeologists.
After that, you can see several Mochica artefacts and tombs in the Huacas de Moche site museum, which displays different tools and high-artistic-level pottery.
The tour continues by visiting the Chimu´s culture Rainbow (Dragon) Temple. Then you will know the Chan Chan archaeological complex, which is approximately 18km2, the Nik-An Palace at the southwest of Chan Chan, walking through its ceremonial squares, worship sites, reservoirs, barns, cemeteries, etc.
Then, we will go to Huanchaco, an ancient fishing creek where you will see the “caballitos de totora” (totora “horses”) that are still used continuing with the artisanal fishing tradition.

AIR TICKETS
If Colourful Peru oversees buying and issuing local-flight tickets, their prices may vary until the date of the flight’s booking and payment. Furthermore, the airline might change the flight number as well as its departure hour.
Once the flight reservation and payment are made, the latter will not be reimbursable. Changes regarding name, flight, route, trip’s date or cancellations are not allowed.

CLIMATE
The climate in Peru can be divided by zones: the western Andes that has a dry and cold climate in winter and its very rainy during the summer. The rainforest that has a hot, wet and rainy climate and the desert coast with a warm climate without regular rainfall.
Trujillo has a privileged climate, warm throughout the year with temperatures between18°C and 25°C. It is warmer during the summer (from December to March)
The rainy season is from November to March and some years it causes some landslides.
The weather doesn’t hold the trip back in general, except when the “El Niño” phenomenon is very aggressive.

HEALTH
The Peruvian Andes are at high altitudes, so it is necessary to take precautions to avoid altitude sickness or “soroche”. It is important to rest a few hours, to walk slowly and to eat light before beginning any tour. We also recommend drinking coca tea that helps with acclimatization. Even though water is potable in most cities, it is advisable to drink bottled water to avoid any problems.

LANGUAGE
Peru’s official language is Spanish, which is spoken by 80% of the population. However, there is a large portion of the population that speaks Quechua and Aymara (especially in the Peruvian Andes). Moreover, we can find 55 dialects in the Amazonian rainforest.
ELECTRICAL CURRENT
Electricity in Peru is 220 Volts and 60 Hertz. In some hotels, you may find dual voltage outlets, however, we suggest checking your appliances’ voltage and take precautions by having a power adapter or converter.
PERUVIAN GASTRONOMY
During the last years, the Peruvian gastronomy has become famous because of its variety and exquisiteness. Among the most known dishes you can find the ceviche, a dish made of fish and seafood marinated in lemon juice.
The gastronomy in the north of Peru is one of the most important in the country. We can find arroz con pato (rice with duck), a dish made with cilantro, an aromatic herb that gives an amazing flavor to it. Among the typical dishes we can also find espesado, a corn soup with a side dish of yellow rice, tortilla de raya, which is an omelet made of skate fish with green onions and yellow chili. The white chicha is the zone’s typical beverage. In Trujillo, we can find cabrito con frejoles (goat meat served with beans), shambar (wheat soup made with pork’s skin and smoked ham), the sopa teóloga, turkey and hen broth with soaked bread, potato, milk and cheese.
