All You Need To Know About Travel To Tambopata

This place harbors some of the wildest, least impacted habitats in the Amazon and the world. It is on the short list of “must-see” nature destinations in Peru and South America. Because of that we highly recommend your to travel to Tambopata.

Planning travel to Tambopata however, can be confusing. There is a lot of information on the internet about the destination, the lodges and the Tambopata tours operators. There are also many synonyms. Tambopata is a river, a province and a national reserve. It is reached through the gateway city of Puerto Maldonado and is directly adjacent to another great nature destination: the Bahuaja Sonene National Park. And, Tambopata shares visits with two other good destinations of the Peruvian Amazon: Manu and Iquitos.

Itinerary

day1 :

Welcome to the Amazon

Arrive in Puerto Maldonado, capital of Madre de Dios, and join a 1-hour bus and 1-hour boat journey till the lodge. Your first taste of the Amazon culinary will be in the river while you let the city behind to enjoy the amazing jungle landscapes.

Refugio Amazonas awaits – a spacious ecolodge, with bar, a massage center, and buffet service with the Tambopata National Reserve behind it. This eco-lodge is home of Wired Amazon, the first citizen science project which turns explorers into a citizen scientist.

A thirty-minute walk from the lodge leads to the 34-meter scaffolding canopy tower. A banister staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. The tower has been built upon high ground, therefore increasing your horizon of the continuous primary forest extending out towards the Tambopata National Reserve. From here views of mixed species canopy flocks as well as toucans, macaws, and raptors are likely.

The light glares against the sheet, highlighting its white color against the dark jungle night. As the bright light flickers, moths begin to flutter towards it. You study them carefully, noting their shapes and patterns. By the end of the night, you might have discovered a new species unknown to science. Now, you get to name it yourself!

day2 :

Condenado Oxbow Lake

You might paddle around Condenado oxbow lake on a canoe, looking for lakeside wildlife such as hoatzin, caiman and horned screamers, hoping to see the otters which are infrequently seen here. You will also be rewarded with overhead sightings of macaws.

Meet the charismatic Don Manuel from the neighboring community of Condenado. Just five minutes downriver from the lodge he grows organically a variety of popular and unknown Amazon crops. On this fruit-farm excursion, every plant and tree you see serves a purpose.

Along the ethnobotanical trail, you will find a variety of plants and trees that are used by the local population with at least the same variety of purposes. Learn about the medicinal (and other) uses of Ajo-Sacha, Yuca de Venado, Uña de Gato, Charcot-Sacha, Para-Para, among several others.

day3 :

Refugio Amazonas Lodge - Airport

It is time to say goodbye, as the expedition comes to an end.

Your visit will make a direct contribution to the scientific projects of Wired Amazon and their conservation efforts onwards learning about the biodiversity of the Tambopata National Reserve.

You will take the journey back to the city to the airport for your national flight onwards.

Useful Info

FOR THE RAINFOREST

Yellow Fever Vaccine:
We recommend receiving the yellow fever vaccine at least 10 days before your arrival to the rainforest. It is a must to have the vaccination certificate during your trip.

ABOUT TAMBOPATA
Tambopata is located in the lower rainforest above the Ecuador’s south. It has a dry and cold climate during winter (from May to October), which is the best time of the year to go. During the day, the temperature is between 25 ºC and 31ºC and during the night it is between 16ºC and 22ºC.

In the winter, the temperatures descend to 9°C in the day and 5°C at night due to the friaje (cold wave) that comes from Argentina, so we suggest being ready for cold temperatures and light drizzles. The rainy season is from November to April. Heavy rains might last hours or even days.

IMPORTANT:
We ask the visitors to carry hand-luggage that doesn’t exceed 15 kilos (32 pounds) since it will be carried by hand from the boats to their room.

CLIMATE
The climate in Peru can be divided by zones: the western Andes that has a dry and cold climate in winter and its very rainy during the summer. The rainforest that has a hot, wet and rainy climate and the desert coast with a warm climate without regular rainfall.

Tambopata has a warm and rainy climate throughout the year. The temperature can decrease in June and July because of the “friaje” (cold wave) due to the southern winds.

The weather doesn’t hold the trip back in general, except when the “El Niño” phenomenon is very aggressive.

TIME ZONE
Peru Time Zone according to Greenwich Mean Time is -5 (GMT -5), same as Bogotá and Mexico throughout the year and same as New York during summer. When it is midday in Peru the hour in the most important cities is:
