The Highest Navigable Body of Water in the World

Puno & Lake Titicaca

Don’t miss a Colouful experience booking the Puno and the Lake Titicaca tour in 3 days. On this trip you will enjoy in one day the Uros and Taquile islands.

The Lake Titicaca is shared with Bolivia and it is located at 3,812 meters above sea level (12, 506.56 feet), between Puno (Peru) 56% and La Paz (Bolivia) 44%. It is known as the highest navigable lake in the world and the second largest in South America with an 8,400 kmsurface area.

On the lake we can find several islands among which the floating islands of the Uros, the Taquile and Amantaní islands and the Sun and Moon islands in Bolivia stand out.

According to the local legend, this lake is the Inca civilization birthplace:  Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo, children of the Sun god, emerged from the freezing lake waters to found Cusco and start its civilization. Here, you will have the chance to experience the traditions and festivities that have been preserved by the inhabitants for centuries.

Puno and the Lake Titicaca has, undoubtedly, the richest folklore because of its variety and color, and it makes Puno stunning to the eyes of the world. Its greatest cultural expression is the Candelaria Festival that is celebrated in February.

Nowadays, Puno is an important agricultural and cattle raising area, especially because of the llamas and alpacas (South American camelids). The inhabitants of Puno still preserve old traditions and festivals that existed many centuries ago and that you can enjoy during your visit.

The Umayo lagoon, in front of the chullpas adds more beauty to the place’s landscape. At this point, we will have the chance to watch different birds and other typical species from the area. Once in your hotel, you will have free time to rest and to acclimatize.

The Uros are Lake Titicacas’ ancient inhabitants, known as the “water tribe”. They build their own islands by constantly adding totora layers. The totora is a material they also use to build their houses and boats.

We will continue sailing until we reach the Taquile Island, inhabited by Quechua natives who have developed an efficient and original social system and a great knitting technique for generations.

We will have lunch once we arrive and then, we will have a trek on its hills and archaeological sites. In the afternoon, we will go back to Puno to our chosen hotel.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch
